As all dog owners know, the food you feed your four legged family member plays a crucial role in his or her health, happiness and overall well being. That being said, you want to make sure that you choose the best food possible for your pup. Well, I can honestly say that, when it came to finding the best dog food for my Sammy and Daisy, we have been around the block quite a few times. I have tried countless brands of dog food, and I have had a lot of disappointment over the years.
I used to buy cheap, commercial grade, store brand dog food. In fact, I tried pretty much every commercial grade brand of dog food that there is, and I have to be honest – all of them stunk. They would either leave my pups listless and just blah, they would make their skin super dry and itchy; one even made their hair start falling out in clumps! I also have tried a few that really messed with Sammy and Daisy’s digestion; they would have really bad gas, inconsistent stools, and even have diarrhea! Talk about horror and dismay!
It suddenly dawned on me that all of these issues that my pups were having was the quality of the food I was giving them. You see, it didn’t matter if I switched the brand from one generic, commercial grade dog food to another; what mattered was that I was feeding them generic, commercial grade dog food at all! Each and every one of those brands contains ingredients that are notorious for being harmful to pups. Things like byproducts, dyes, fake flavors, preservatives, rice, corn and other ingredients that are known to wreck havoc on dogs. When I finally realized that the issue was the fact that I was feeding Daisy and Sammy commercial grade dog food, I started shopping way more wisely for their food.
A friend of my mom’s recommended that I try Orijen dog food. She told me that this food was free of grains, which did wonders for her dogs and was rated as one of the top dog foods for the boxer breed. Come to find out that many dogs can’t properly digest grains, and that is usually a major ingredient in all commercial grain dog foods. My mom’s friend also told me that Orijen was packed with protein from various sources, like flounder, turkey, chicken and mackerel.
Taking my mother’s friends advice, I went and bought a bag of Orijen dog food, and let me tell you, I noticed a difference in Sammy and Daisy almost immediately! Their skin cleared up, their coats were lush and shiny, and they seemed to have a lot more energy. Also, they weren’t as hungry as they were when they were eating the cheap brands, and their digestive issues cleared up. I was completely amazed!
So, needless to say, since we had such great results, I have been feeding my pups Orijen ever since. I can’t tell you what a relief it is knowing that my fur babies are finally getting the nutrition that they need, and that they are just so much happier and healthier!
